Sundanzer has been offering direct drive (we call it daylight drive) refrigerators since the 1990s. We have had one at Living Energy Farm for three years, and we love it! These refrigerators are super-insulated. The compressor runs when the sun is out, and the insulation keeps the fridge cold overnight and during cloudy spells. Because they use thermal storage, these refrigerators work best if kept full. If you don’t have enough food to store, anything heavy (like water) will work as thermal mass to keep the temperature low through cloudy spells. This refrigerator is a chest design, about half the size of a large, upright fridge. The temperature does vary a bit more than a “normal” refrigerator, but overall they work great. The operating cost is about 5% as much as running a refrigerator from a typical off-grid battery set.
